- Difference between balanced/unbalanced serger stitch, wide/narrow/rolled stitches
- Seam Allowance
- How to secure ends
- Learning to guide fabric for inside and outside curves
- How to start and stop in the middle of fabric
- How to turn outside/inside corners
- Wrapping corners to reduce bulk
- Create bands and casings
- Stabilizing seams for stretch material
- Understanding differential feed
Part II will expand to learn more techniques:
- Different ways of gathering
- Attaching elastic
- How to remove serger stitches
- Putting in a zipper
- Serging in a circle
- 3-thread stitch
- Making spaghetti straps/Narrow straps and tubing
- Attach ribbing, binding
- Rolled edges
- Pintucking on the serger
- Lettuce edging
- Flatlock stitch
- Using the serger to create texture in fabric
Supply List:
- Serger in good working order and knowledge of the machine, power cord, foot pedal (This is not a class to learn how to thread your serger)
- Manual and Serger accessories (tweezers, screwdriver, brush)
- Optional: Serger Piping/Cording Foot
- New serger needles (80/12 and/or 90/14)
- Scissors / cutting tools
- Optional: Seam sealant (like fray block or fray check)
- 4 cones regular serging thread (can be same color or different colors)
- 1 cone or spool of textured or decorative thread
- Double eye needle or large eye needle (ex. Tapestry)
- Basic Sewing supplies: Pins/Clips, scissors, tape measure, seam/sewing gauge, marking pen or chalk, seam ripper, hand sewing needle, point turner (can be chopstick), etc.
- Seat cushion for comfort and height, if desired
- Pen or pencil
Preparation Before Class:
- Please have your serger set up for a 4 thread overlock stitch with new needles. Make sure you can remove/change, untighten and tighten needles. If new machine or just serviced, they may be hard to loosen.
- Please have knowledge of basic operation of your serger (threading, changing needle).
- Please list your Serger make/model at time of registration. Thank you
Class Cancellation Policy
To reserve a seat, all Pocono Sew & Vac classes must be paid in full upon registration. In the event that a student needs to cancel their reservation for a class, they should notify PS&V at least 7 days in advance (by phone) to be eligible for a full refund. Cancellations made less than 7 days before class will not be issued a refund.
If a class does not have the minimum number of participants 7 days prior to class day, the teacher will cancel class. The customer will be fully refunded within 7 to 10 business days. Any questions call PS&V at 800-442-8227.
Some classes require homework to be done before class, such as cutting/prepping fabrics. If homework is required, it will be posted in the class description. Please read the class description thoroughly before signing up before a class. If homework is not done by the start of class, you will not be able to attend, and a refund will not be issued. If you have any questions regarding class homework, please call the store and we will be happy to help.
