Unleash your inner artist in this design-only class! Learn to create your own templates and explore the art of raw-edge machine appliqué while creating a fabric face in a relaxed learning environment. You do not need to be able to draw! We will take fabric - fun, novelty fabrics, and fabric that is dated or even hopelessly ugly! - to create charming, one-of-a-kind pieces of fabric art for your wall or gift giving.
SKILLS REQUIRED:
This class is not suitable for beginners. You should be comfortable with sewing machine operation and have intermediate sewing skills in order to quilt and bind this project at home. The instructor will demonstrate how to complete this project.
Supply List:
- Machine is not needed for this class.
- Sharp fabric scissors at least 6 inches. Do not bring small embroidery scissors – they are not appropriate for the type of cutting you will be doing. Recommend scissors that are at least 6-8 inches (e.g. Karen Kay Buckley scissors 6 inch applique scissors).
- Sharp pencil
- Kit ($10 payable to instructor at time of class)
- Scrap fabric – small pieces are great (think small scraps of solid for eyes, eyebrows; jewelry, something for lips). One or two pieces to use as flesh – which can be flesh-toned or some students have created green and purple faces! Whatever you want to use as the face and neck should be at least 8x10 inches. Larger pieces for hair (a fat quarter at least) – look for large scale prints as cutting up teeny tiny prints to create waves and curls for hair can be really hard on your hands. Novelty fabric – basketballs or horse mane for hair? A theme for your face such as your favorite sports team? Even unattractive vintage fabric works well in creating a face. Big flowers, bold prints, animals, birds – it is recommended students bring at least a gallon size bag of scraps to work from, and instructor will also provide plenty of scraps for student use.
