Basic building blocks for future quilt making – that’s what you’ll get in this 6-class course. Although absolute beginners to quilting are expected, those who have dabbled in quilting, but lack the fundamentals, may also benefit. Some sewing knowledge must precede this course. Familiarity with your sewing machine is essential! It’s all done with straight stitching… nothing fancy is required from your sewing machine. Use the presser foot recommended in the manual for “piecing” or “straight sewing.” If you have a foot designed for 1/4” seam allowance, bring that, along with the usual piecing foot.

The 6 classes will cover the fundamentals from understanding the grain to binding the finished quilt. The simple block components presented will equip you to make many basic and interesting quilts that include rail fence, 4-patch, 9-patch, half-square triangles and flying geese. Some minimal homework will be assigned.

Class #1 requires 1/3 yard each of 3 coordinated fabrics (listed below). You will make a table topper with this fabric. After we discuss “Color, Value and Fabric Choices,” you will select additional fabrics, plus batting and backing to complete the table topper and including fabric for the top of the sampler quilt shown – requiring about 3 yards of fabric. For the best result, use only 100% cotton quilting fabric. Home dec, outdoor fabric, polyester blends will not perform in the same way.  Pre-washing the fabric is required for this class. Serge or zig-zag the cut edges first, and drop a color catcher or 2 (found in the laundry aisle of the supermarket) in the washer in case of color bleeding. Press the fabric after washing.
