This class is hand applique only; and you will complete the project (wall hanging, table runner or pillow cover) at home. No sewing machines are needed. Instruction will include types of applique, circles, 45º angle – 2 ways, inner and outer angles, concave curves and convex curves. Students, please serge or zig-zag the cut edges and wash the fabric. Press fabric and cut squares before class.
The pattern, available from the teacher, includes the instructions plus illustrations and 12 applique motifs to get you started. A file with 3 motifs will be emailed to you prior to class, so that you can be ready to begin right away when the class begins. Make templates using these motifs and bring them to class.
For the best result, use only 100% cotton quilting fabric. Home dec, outdoor fabric, polyester blends will not perform in the same way.
Supply List:
- Fabric
- Background fabric – 5 (or more) squares at 5 ½ inches (neutral color)
- Contrast fabric – 4 squares at 5 ½ inches (multi-color)
- Border fabric – multicolor, or another co-ordinate (not needed in class)
- Binding – any co-ordinate (not needed in class)
- Batting and Backing – 22-24 inches square (not needed in class)
- Scraps for applique – 8 or more, no larger than 6 inches square, with patterns marked. Choose heart, leaf and circle plus any others you choose.
- Notions & Tools
- Needles – fine quality sharps (use a needle that is comfortable)
- A thimble, if you’re comfortable using one.
- Thread – silk is preferred, or a fine 50 wt. cotton or polyester (1 light neutral and 1 dark neutral is all that is required, or match every applique scrap, if you wish)
- Scissors & pins
- Marking implements for removeable marks (Frixion, water-soluble, chalk pens, etc)
- Throw pillow – lap size or smaller (not part of the project, but bring to class)
- Template material – plastic, freezer paper or mylar meant for templates.
- Pattern – available from the teacher, $10.
Class Cancellation Policy
To reserve a seat, all Pocono Sew & Vac classes must be paid in full upon registration. In the event that a student needs to cancel their reservation for a class, they should notify PS&V at least 7 days in advance (by phone) to be eligible for a full refund. Cancellations made less than 7 days before class will not be issued a refund.
If a class does not have the minimum number of participants 7 days prior to class day, the teacher will cancel class. The customer will be fully refunded within 7 to 10 business days. Any questions call PS&V at 800-442-8227.
Some classes require homework to be done before class, such as cutting/prepping fabrics. If homework is required, it will be posted in the class description. Please read the class description thoroughly before signing up before a class. If homework is not done by the start of class, you will not be able to attend, and a refund will not be issued.
